Over Christmas I will be redesigning my home network, utilizing all of the technology in my house to make it better and more productive, as well as look nicer.
Just been sketching something's in Visio atm (2003 not 2007
) and this is what I've come up with
[photo:2215]
The local domain Brownfamily will be dropped and replaced with home.nbdev.co.uk, which will also include the new look fully external server, with ISA.
This update to the Brownfamily network is expected to take 2 weeks from start to finish, with partial networking while this is happening.
The first system to be redone will be the server, taking approx 2 days to complete, while this is going on, client machines will also be updated, either to windows vista or a fresh install of XP, as part of the 6 month OS recycle program implemented in version 2 of the network. Office 2003 will be updated to Office 2007, with the PDF/XPS converter installed as well. Yes, office 2007 will be rolled out during this time period. Training will be provided to users to support the update.
The server may have exchange 2007 installed on it with Windows Server 2003 R2 running in x64, if it's available during the network update, else it'll have exchange 2003 put on to it, and Windows will be installed in x86.
SCE System Center essentials will be looked at again for Management of clients and servers, but if not released, will not be adopted, and WSUS with RealVNC will be kept on. (see: http://www.Microsoft.com/systemcenter/sce/default.mspx)
I'm hoping for exchange 2007 anyhow, but that all depends on whether it's released by then, it should be as it's gonna be released at the same time as vista, or should be anyhow. November 30th (see: http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/messaging_collaboration/exchange_2007_to_rtm_in_december.html?). If it's not, then the exchange update will wait until home.nbdev.co.uk's update to V5 during the summer.
All of the hardware has now arrived for the V4 update, gigabit network cards, a new cat6 module for the patchpanel, to reenable link 4, as well as 5 patch leads to enable increased connectivity. (The 2 cables from the server)
The server will have 2 network cards installed into it, 1 gigabit for the local network, and the on board 100 megabit for the external network. This will allow me to assign the onboard card a external IP, and keep the local network on the 10.x.x.x network range.
Anyhow, it's gonna be really busy for my over Xmas, hopefully www.nbdev.co.uk will only be down for a day while I get DNS back up and running, I might talk to Rick (thewizard) about someway of having DNS work from a backup server if I can. Will have to wait and see on that one.
That's all for this update
